Early Dominance
In the absence of their star Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers surged to a 31-point lead against the Mavericks in Game 4 of the Western Conference playoffs’ first round. Led by Paul George and James Harden, who each contributed 33 points, the Clippers narrowly avoided a humiliating comeback by winning 116-111 and tying the series, preventing a potential embarrassing reversal.
George and Harden Lead the Charge
George set the tone early in the game, scoring 16 points in the first quarter, including three three-pointers, setting a new personal playoff record. The Clippers also set a franchise record with eight three-pointers in the first quarter, establishing a commanding 39-16 lead. By halftime, they extended their lead to 55-24, with Harden adding to the onslaught from beyond the arc. However, the Mavericks, led by Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, mounted a comeback effort, with Irving scoring 40 points, including a crucial basket that briefly gave the Mavericks a 105-104 lead in the fourth quarter.
Clippers Rally Late
As their lead slipped away, the Clippers turned to George and Harden in the clutch. George drained a go-ahead three-pointer, followed by Harden converting a four-point play, combining for six consecutive points to reclaim the lead. In the final seconds, they sealed the victory with free throws, scoring a combined 18 points in the last five minutes of the game, and tying the series at 2-2.
Harden’s Impact
Harden’s 33 points included 15 in the decisive fourth quarter, along with 6 rebounds and 7 assists. George also contributed 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals. Despite Irving’s heroic effort for the Mavericks, scoring 40 points, he ultimately fell short.
Doncic’s Triple-Double
Doncic recorded his fourth career playoff triple-double with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, but it wasn’t enough to secure a third home victory and capitalize on their 2-1 series lead against the Clippers. (Jilikoa)
